Patient Care Trust Fund of the Committee of Interns & Residents/SEIU

Mission:

CIR’s Patient Care Trust Fund (PCTF) is a resident-led fund that supports patient care and safety improvements in the NYC Health + Hospitals system. Each academic year, the PCTF provides eligible housestaff with critical funding for research, medical equipment, educational materials, community-based initiatives, and more. Through grants and member engagement, we ensure residents have a powerful voice to improve residency and advance quality care for all New Yorkers.

History:

The PCTF was established as residents organized to save New York City’s public hospital system from proposed funding cuts and facility closures that threatened healthcare access for over 1 million New Yorkers. After a successful public campaign, CIR members negotiated the PCTF as part of the 1978-1980 contract between CIR and NYC Health + Hospitals (then NYC Health & Hospitals Corporation). Initially serving as a pool of resources for purchasing equipment and training materials, the Fund has expanded its grantmaking to help residents lead research and community-based initiatives that advance patient safety, health equity, and quality improvement at their facilities. Since 1981, the Fund remains an emblem of our members’ commitment to enhancing the residency experience and ensuring quality and equitable care for all.
